Breakthrough Solar Heat Technology Transforms Hot Water Efficiency at Brooklyn House

Solar Heat Exchangers Delivers Future-Proof Innovation at Brooklyn House

Student accommodation today is about more than just a place to sleep. It is about designing resilient, energy-smart environments that support modern living, and Brooklyn House in Pretoria’s academic heartland sets that new benchmark. This development is home to 297 students and places sustainability at its core, with Solar Heat installing the project’s hot water system to support efficient and reliable energy use.

The Engineered Solution Installed by Solar Heat

A rooftop installation of a central hot water system featuring large grey heat accumulators, two Alliance heat pumps, and solar photovoltaic panels.
High-efficiency hot water system featuring Alliance heat pumps and heat accumulators, providing sustainable energy for the Brooklyn House Student Accommodation.

To meet the site’s rigorous requirements, we installed a high-capacity plant designed for maximum efficiency:

  • 4 x 80kW Alliance Direct Heat Pumps: These units extract ambient heat from the environment, drastically reducing energy consumption.
  • 2 x 15,000L Solar Heat Accumulators from Solar Heat Exchangers: Our in-house manufactured tanks capture and store heat, acting as a “thermal battery” for the building.

The Innovation of Indirect Heating

The technical advantage of this installation lies in the combination of technologies. Instead of heating water directly, energy is transferred to our Solar Heat Accumulators, which capture and store the heat. This indirect heating method protects the longevity of the heat pumps and maintains peak energy efficiency over time.

Measurable Results

The impact of this engineered system is significant for both the property owner and the residents:

  • Up to 70% savings in water heating costs.
  • Reliable, efficient service for hundreds of students, regardless of South Africa’s variable climates.
  • Reduced strain on the local electrical grid.
  • Space-saving design, tailored for high-density urban projects with limited plant space.

Revolutionising Hot Water Storage: Solar Heat’s Heat Accumulators

As we embrace 2026, Solar Heat Exchangers continues to focus on sustainable thermal solutions. Our proudly manufactured Heat Accumulators offer professionals and installers efficient options for efficient hot water storage across residential, commercial, and industrial applications. These innovative tanks deliver unmatched durability, energy savings, and versatility for modern plumbing/HVAC projects.

What is a Heat Accumulator?

A Heat Accumulator serves as an energy-efficient thermal storage tank using indirect water heating. Multiple heat sources, such as heat pumps, thermal solar panels, gas boilers, heat recovery systems, or electrical elements, heat it. The tank stores water at atmospheric pressure, acting like a “battery” for thermal energy. This stored heat transfers to potable water at regulated mains pressure via a stainless-steel heat exchanger, ensuring safe distribution to usage points without mixing.

Manufactured from premium GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) with high-quality vinyl ester resins, these tanks store water up to 80°C while resisting corrosion for exceptional longevity.

The Stainless-Steel Heat Exchanger

Our heat exchangers use 316-grade corrugated stainless steel piping, providing greater surface area for efficient heat transfer. The corrugated design creates turbulent flow, even at low velocities, enhancing efficiency and reducing scale buildup. Flexibility accommodates thermal expansion, minimising maintenance compared to standard exchangers or electrical geysers.

Key Benefits of Solar Heat Accumulators

Heat Accumulators outperform traditional options, making them ideal for installers seeking reliable, low-maintenance solutions:

  • Low Thermal Losses — GRP’s thermal conductivity (0.04 W/Km) is 200 times lower than steel.
  • Corrosion-Free and Long Lifespan — Non-corrosive material ensures durability in harsh conditions.
  • Optimal Stratification — Indirect heating prevents cold water mixing for consistent temperatures.
  • Easy Installation — Lightweight (up to 5 times lighter than steel) and on-site assembly from components.
  • Reduced Bacterial Risk — Indirect system lowers chances of Legionnaires’ disease.
  • Customisable with Backup — Options for electrical elements in 4 kW or 12 kW increments.

These features cut client energy bills by up to two-thirds while promoting eco-friendly systems.

Versatile Applications Across Sectors

Heat Accumulators adapt seamlessly to diverse needs:

Residential

Perfect for domestic hot water storage and under-floor heating. Pair with solar geysers or heat pumps for energy-independent homes.

Commercial

Excel in centralised systems for hotels, apartments, retirement villages, and multi-pressure zone buildings. Handle high demand flows without pressure loss.

Industrial

Suited for processing plants, heat recovery, and large-scale storage. Custom builds support volumes up to 15,000L for demanding applications.

Additional uses include cold water storage and integration with various heating methods.

Custom Sizing Options

Solar Heat builds Accumulators to order, with standard volumes from 500L to 15,000L. Options include varied flow rates (0.75 L/s to 4.5 L/s at ΔT of 40K with ΔP of 50KPa), heat pump connections, and element backups on request.

Conclusion

In an era where sustainability and cost-efficiency are paramount, Solar Heat Exchangers’ Heat Accumulators stand out as a reliable choice for modern hot water storage needs. From specialised GRP construction and stainless steel heat exchangers to customisable sizing and seamless integration across residential, commercial, and industrial applications, these tanks deliver long-term reliability, minimal maintenance, and significant energy savings.
